Layton’s Chance Book Club
As a retired English teacher, one of my visions was to be a part of a book club. When the winery opened in 2010, I started thinking of how we could incorporate reading and wine. With the blessings of our “Jen”eral manager, I started emails and posts to see if there was interest in a winery book club.
We started slowly, but had our first real meeting in March of 2011. Before that an organizational meeting yielded only one response. Susan Parker of Salisbury and I decided to read and book for April, and our first book was Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. At that meeting we started to accumulate members and a plan. In addition to Susan, the first few members were Barbara Murphy (deceased), Diana Jackson, Laura Higgs, Gail McClain, Barbara Bailey, and Karen Tobat.
We have enjoyed field trips to Ford Theatre and the Messiah at Chesapeake College, and a ghost walk through Berlin hosted by Mindie Burgoyne.
We are still going strong with a monthly attendance of between 4-23 members. We meeting on the fourth Sunday of the month at the winery at 2 pm. Come join us on January 26 at 2 p.m. when we will discuss Eleanor and Hick by Susan Quinn.
